Morning Brew: Integrity counts in voting for FBS coach of year

Scholarship, leadership and integrity.

Those are the three ingredients to the Bobby Dodd Award as FBS national coach of the year.

Clemson?s Dabo Swinney won it on Saturday and is a great choice for the honor. Swinney led his team to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and the Tigers will play Wednesday night in the Orange Bowl against West Virginia.

Integrity does seem to be part of his personality. For example, Swinney has a foundation to help raise money to fight cancer and has done things such as taking the entire team to the Greenville Children?s Hospital to visit patients battling the disease.

But maybe integrity ? or perceived integrity ? shouldn?t be part of the equation. Here?s the reason. The only two-time winner is Joe Paterno of Penn State, most recently in 2005.? Another recent winner was Jim Tressel of Ohio State.
